New research reveals that the death rate for pregnant women in the United States declined in 2022, falling dramatically from the pandemic’s peak six decades earlier.
According to a final count given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday, more than 1,200 U.S. women died in 2021 during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth. According to preliminary agency statistics, there were 733 maternal fatalities in 2022, while the ultimate total is expected to be higher.
According to officials, the incidence of maternal mortality is projected to approach pre-pandemic levels by 2022. Before COVID-19, however, the rate was the highest it had been in decades.
From the worst to almost the worse? I wouldn’t really call it a feat,” said Omari Maynard, a New Yorker whose spouse passed away in 2019 after giving birth.
The CDC records the number of women who die during pregnancy, delivery, and up to 42 days after giving birth. The major reasons are excessive bleeding, blood vessel obstructions, and infections.
COVID-19 is especially harmful to pregnant women, and doctors believe it was the primary cause of the 2021 increase. Some activists assert that overworked physicians may have increased the danger by neglecting pregnant women’s concerns.
